So what is a Cespitularia? Well, it is a Xenid coral falling into the family Xeniidae. It is a lot like a Xenia except the polyps do not generally pulse. It is very unique in the world of soft corals due to the reflective sclerites embedded in the tissue. These reflective sclerites catch the light from your bulbs and reflect it back to you! This makes it look like glitter, or a metallic paint job on a car! They have an underdeveloped digestive system so they feed on nothing but the dissolved organics in your tank, (and, of course, photosynthesis products). This makes it a living filter in your tank! That’s right! This coral actually cleans your tank as it grows! They mostly come from Africa and they ship notoriously poorly, turning into “reef soup” after spending 36 or more hours in a bag. That’s why you rarely see them in the shops. They die before they get here! You do not want to be the unfortunate soul opening that stinky bag! LOL. I will ship to you with the utmost of haste so that you get a live animal. Look around and you will see that I am the only online vender to give a live guarantee on Cespitularia! Check out my captive propagated ones as they are well established, growing like nuts, and much hardier than wild ones. (they don’t like drastic changes in Salinity). Still, this in not a beginners coral! Keeping the color on these guys is a matter of good Ph and Alkalinity (8.2 to 8.4 and 8 to 12 dkh). They look their bluest under 20K halides. I have also seen them look quite good under 14K Phoenix and T5’s. Move her around till you find where she colors best in your tank. I have seen her look very good under intense 20K Radiums. Under my 14K Phoenix she is bluer under moderate/low intensity. She NEEDS constant water motion! If her polyps aren’t moving, she’s gonna crash!
SHIPPING ADJUSTMENT FOR CESPITULARIA: She is a delicate shipper and as such, I ship her in a bigger bag. Normal shipping charges are $45 for up to 4 frags, each additional frag is $3.00 extra. The two smaller sizes of Cespitularia ship for $45 for the one frag, with each additional frag add $3.00 to the total. The colony size of Cespitularia requires a bigger bag yet. She will ship for $60 with each additional frag being an extra $3.00. Shipping more than one Cespitularia?? Contact me for a price.
